Ostrich
The ostrich lives mainly in Africa among herds of zebras and gnus.
It is the world's largest bird, sometimes weighing up to 300 pounds.
The ostrich cannot fly because its wings are too small to lift its
big body. The bird can, however, run up to 40 miles per hour with
a stride span of 15 feet. It is NOT true that an ostrich hides its
head in the sand when frightened. The bird uses its great speed to
outrun its natural enemies. When cornered, it will fight with its
sharp hooves for defense. The ostrich hen lays about 15 eggs
weighing 3 pounds each. The male, a very good father, often sits on
the eggs to keep them warm at night and helps with the newborn
chicks.
